The Freedom to Change Plans
We cancelled our plans tonight and I felt the exact opposite of missing out. #
We were supposed to go out tonight. Nothing major, just plans made earlier in the week when Thursday still belonged to an imaginary version of us who would be energetic and socially present after work. Actual Thursday arrived and neither of us wanted it. I came home, saw Yuri, and before I had even taken my coat off I could tell. He had the same expression I probably had. «Do you want to go?» «Do you?» That was enough. Plans cancelled. Younger me would have needed justification. Tired, busy, weather, headache, anything that turned staying home into an unavoidable consequence rather than a choice. I used to think cancelling meant failing at having a life. Somewhere along the way I realised choosing the sofa can be having a life too. We changed into comfortable clothes, ordered nothing extravagant, made food, opened something to drink and put music on. My makeup remained on for approximately another hour before I removed it and transformed completely. There is something delicious about washing off a face prepared for public life and deciding nobody else gets access to the evening. I tied my hair up, put on the softest thing I own and sat beside Yuri with my feet under me. We watched something. Paused it to talk. Forgot what we were watching. Restarted. This is the glamorous reality of long relationships. At some point he got up for water and brought me a glass without asking. Tiny gesture, automatic. I watched him put it down beside me and felt that quiet recognition I still get sometimes, the one that says this person knows me in motion. Not only facts about me. Patterns. He knows I will want water. He knows when I am tired before I admit it. He knows which silence means I am thinking and which silence means something is wrong. I know his movements too. Which cupboard he will open. Where he will look for the thing he cannot find. When he wants to talk and when he is simply sharing space. This kind of knowledge is not dramatic enough for love songs, but I would choose it over drama every time. Later I checked the site, answered a couple of comments and resisted doing actual work. The windows were still showing a trace of evening when we finished dinner. I keep noticing that. Maybe by May I will stop writing about light. Probably not. Mom sent a message while we were on the sofa and I answered without moving. Dad had sent something earlier. Nobody needed me urgently. Nobody was waiting somewhere because we cancelled. The whole evening opened. I thought about freedom in the smallest possible sense, not political or philosophical, simply the adult freedom to change a plan because you no longer want it. Nobody gives you a certificate for this. It just arrives one day. You realise you can go home. You can stay home. You can say no without constructing a court case. Tonight we did. The abandoned outfit is hanging over a chair. I will wear it another time. Nothing was lost.
Remember me, Eclipse.
Why?
Because every thought leaves a trace. If something moved you, disturbed you, softened you, or made you think, leave it here, quietly.
