The millennium bug

Read this slowly. Let the words arrive before you decide what they mean.

The Year 2000 Did Not Explode, But I Still Feel Different… #

Well.

Computers did not explode…
Banks still exist…
Airplanes did not fall from the sky…
Civilization survived midnight…

Slightly disappointing honestly considering how dramatically adults discussed the millennium bug for the last six months. Tonight felt strange anyway. Mom hosted a small dinner and the apartment looked unreal in candlelight and winter reflections. Everyone kept talking about “the future” as if January 1st 2000 would immediately produce flying cars and emotional maturity.

Neither arrived.

At midnight people kissed, glasses touched, fireworks exploded somewhere distant over M., and for a few seconds the city looked suspended outside the windows.

I stood there thinking:
the world is technically different now.

Not emotionally.
Not physically.
But numerically.

And somehow that matters.

Mom wore black silk and Angel again because apparently the millennium deserved its own perfume entrance. One client spent twenty minutes explaining the stock market while clearly drunk. Another woman cried suddenly during dessert because “time moves too fast.”

Honestly relatable.

Later Dad called from G. just after midnight sounding tired and amused by the entire concept of Y2K panic. I could hear people laughing behind him and glasses moving and probably cigarette smoke through the phone line somehow. Then M. called. His voice sounded warm and sleepy and calmer than everyone else tonight. He said the sea looked black under fireworks and for some reason that sentence affected me more than all the champagne philosophy from adults. The strange thing is that I do feel different suddenly.

Not transformed.
Just… Aware.

Like standing in a doorway without moving yet.

Because every thought leaves a trace. If something moved you, disturbed you, softened you, or made you think, leave it here, quietly.
